RENEWED VITALITY, VISION AND A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR PURPOSE AS BELIEVERS

How does the temptation of Christ open our eyes to the audacity and temerity of Satan? I personally feel that if Satan could attack Christ after He had fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matt 4:1-11), Satan could attack anyone. No one is too big and mighty for Satan to attack. Satan would always take chances when the opportunity arises for him to do so. The watchword for us throughout the season of Lent is: "Watch and pray that you may not enter into Temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Matt 26:41). We fast and pray to feed our spirit. Through fasting and praying, we are able to curb and tame the flesh and our fleshy desires.

Only the spirit of God can destroy the carnality of humans. When Satan launches his attacks on us, he goes for those desires that appeal to our carnal nature. He goes for what appeals to our cravings: the lust of the eyes, our greed, our obsession with wealth, and our insatiable desire to acquire material possessions. Satan tested Jesus on those desires, forgetting the dual nature of Christ: that Christ was human as well as divine. Satan failed three times here, but I am pretty sure that there were many other temptations that the biblical writers did not bother to record.
